This year, the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association joins the hockey community in remembering five individuals whose passion, dedication, and contributions left a lasting mark on our game and our organization.

JIM ROBSON

Jim Robson was the unmistakable voice of the Vancouver Canucks for nearly three decades. His storytelling, professionalism, and genuine love for the game brought generations of fans closer to their team, making him one of the most respected broadcasters in Canadian hockey history.

Beyond the microphone, Jim was admired for his humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to the sport. For countless fans, hearing his voice was synonymous with Canucks hockey, and his legacy will continue to resonate for generations.

JOHN GARRETT

Affectionately known as "Cheech," John Garrett first represented the Canucks as a goaltender before becoming one of the franchise's most beloved broadcasters. His humour, authenticity, and passion made every broadcast feel like a conversation with a friend.

Whether sharing stories in the broadcast booth or supporting alumni and community events, John had an incredible ability to make people smile. He will be remembered not only for his hockey knowledge but for the genuine warmth he brought to everyone around him.

ERNIE “PUNCH” MCLEAN

Ernie "Punch" McLean devoted his life to developing players and growing the game of hockey in British Columbia. One of the province's most accomplished and respected coaches, he built an extraordinary coaching career spanning junior hockey, the WHL, and the NHL, earning admiration for his leadership, determination, and unwavering commitment to his players.

Beyond his accomplishments behind the bench, Punch was known for the relationships he built throughout the hockey community. His passion for mentoring young athletes and coaches left a lasting impact on generations of players, many of whom credit him for helping shape both their careers and their character. His influence on hockey in British Columbia will continue to be felt for years to come.

GARY MEEHAN

Gerry Meehan dedicated more than five decades to the game of hockey, making his mark as an NHL player, coach, scout, and executive. His career reflected a lifelong commitment to the sport, and he earned widespread respect for his leadership, knowledge, and steady presence both on and off the ice.

While his contributions extended across the National Hockey League, Gerry's impact was measured just as much by the people he mentored and the relationships he built throughout the hockey world. His passion for the game and quiet professionalism left a lasting impression on teammates, colleagues, and friends, and his legacy will continue to be remembered throughout the hockey community.

JOHN MCKEACHIE

For generations of British Columbia sports fans, John McKeachie was one of the most familiar and beloved voices in the province. Over a broadcasting career spanning more than four decades, John spent 27 years as a sports anchor with BCTV and was closely connected to Vancouver Canucks hockey as an on-air host and colour commentator. His career also included radio, print and television, including McKeachie’s Hockey Talk on CBC, while his unmistakable personality, humour and passion for sport made him a fixture in the B.C. sports community.

John’s passing holds special meaning for the Vancouver Canucks Alumni family. He was recently welcomed as an Associate Member of the Alumni Association, recognizing his many years of connection to the Canucks and his continued support of the organization and the game. John was also named to the 2026 BC Sports Hall of Fame induction class, a fitting recognition of the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the generations of fans who welcomed him into their homes.

Each of these remarkable individuals leaves behind a legacy that extends well beyond wins, losses, or statistics. They helped shape the history of hockey in British Columbia and across Canada, inspiring players, colleagues, and fans through their character, passion, and dedication.
